Welcome to the time of year where we reflect on things to leave behind in the previous year, and shift our focus on how to be better in the next! 2019 is an extra special one, because it’s the start of a totally new DECADE! I’m excited to leave a lot of the old behind and bring on the new in 2020!
Things I’m Leaving Behind in 2019
I’ve sworn off Victoria’s Secret’s ill-fitting bras for years now, but they were still my go-to store for panties. But after their chief marketing officer’s transphobic and fatphobic comments last year, I can no longer support the brand at all. I haven’t actually bought anything from there in a year or so, but they won’t be coming into the new decade with me at all!
Brands that Test on Animals
It’s 2020; there’s no need to support any brands that test on animals. I always try to be diligent about this, but when I was unemployed and subsequently underemployed for the first half of 2019, I didn’t put as much effort into this as I should have. A bad habit I have when I’m worried about money is to buy whatever is cheap and looks like it’ll work, without paying attention to the brand.
There’s no shortage of affordable cruelty-free brands and there is no excuse for me to spend my money supporting brands who are cruel to other creatures because they want to save a few bucks.
Credit Card Debt
I will sometimes use my credit card instead of saving up for something, or (more commonly) not using my existing savings because I’m afraid of depleting it. But in the long run, I’m spending less by NOT using a credit card. Unless I pay it off before the statement comes, which let’s be real… doesn’t always happen.
One of my big goals for 2020 is to pay off all my credit card debt, which is a little over $2000. It’s not a huge amount by any means, but it’s just enough to where I can’t pay it off in one fell swoop without it hurting or feeling like my savings account will be too empty. It will definitely be nice to only have student loan debt to worry about after paying off my credit cards!
Okay, I probably won’t entirely cut meat out of my diet entirely on January 1. But becoming a vegetarian is something that’s been in the back of my mind for over a decade; I’ve just been too nervous to take the plunge. But lately, my hometown has gotten a lot more vegetarian-friendly, and I’ve also found out I like most fake meats. The Beyond Breakfast sandwich at Dunkin is amazing, and Morning Star has delicious fake meat options that I actually CRAVE. That’s something I never thought would happen, haha.
Working From Bed
I have a habit of working on all my blogging/social media related endeavors from my bed, which probably doesn’t sound like a bad thing. But I definitely notice more back pain, neck pain, and posture issues than I have before. I literally have a desk across from my bed; there’s no reason why I shouldn’t use it for my work!
I don’t know about you, but I have a BAD habit of not deleting old files, photos I don’t need anymore, notes from like 2016… etc. I’m making it a point in the new decade to audit my files and delete what I don’t need anymore and will never use again. I’m also going to unfollow social media accounts that no longer interest me or are inactive.
What are you leaving behind this decade? Let me know the things you’re leaving in 2019!
